AngloGold shines

Good morning {{first_name}},

In case you missed it on Friday, I’ve decided to change things up for this earnings season. I hate rushing through SENS announcements. I especially hate delivering a gigantic Ghost Bites that is too daunting for you to read.

So, on busy days, I’ll be splitting Ghost Bites in half. It will be a mix of the previous day’s news and whatever comes out in the morning, as the idea is to group the companies sensibly.

To kick us off on this fine Monday, I have a Ghost Bites themed around mining and minerals. This means you get the giants (AngloGold and Impala Platinum), as well as a couple of juniors. Oh yes, and Hulamin with their limited understanding of how trading statements are supposed to work.

For a view from a completely different sector, check out the latest episode of Investec’s excellent No Ordinary Wednesday podcast. They bring you news from the world of AI, with two Investec analysts having recently attended technology conferences in Boston and San Fran. There’s nothing quite like on-the-ground knowledge!

Have a great morning. I look forward to bringing you the next set of updates around lunchtime today.

Japan: no matcha for Chinese disruption

The Chinese disruption playbook has been incredible to observe in the automotive industry. As Dominique Olivier explains, Japan is at risk of the same thing happening in matcha. Green powder has become a red ocean of competition.

The real risk in the markets is playing it safe

Markets are wildly volatile things. But if you have the strength to look through those swings, there’s a bigger risk to be scared of: inflation. As Kingsley Williams of Satrix explains, history has taught us what the best protection against inflation is.

Global markets update with Shaun Murison

Trump paused dramatic action against Iran over the weekend as the two countries prepare to engage in talks once again, and improved risk appetite sees US futures notably firmer in early trade this week.

The dollar has softened alongside oil prices, while gold and precious metals have found a bid at the start of the week.

Asian benchmarks are mostly lower, however, as artificial intelligence related shares weigh on semiconductor stocks, although the Hang Seng is buoyed by internet stocks led by Alibaba after it released its latest AI model.

The rand is firmer against a softer dollar, and we expect a positive start for the JSE All Share Index.

This week sees US payrolls data among the biggest ticket items for traders to watch. On the earnings front, SpaceX and Palantir are among the big tech names reporting.
